Usually, braces are placed to align the position of the teeth in the jaw (top, bottom or both), but many people still fear of this treatment to solve the problem, which is not only aesthetic and can even define our posture and the healthiness of our spine.

Before putting braces, the dentist will take some x-rays to understand in detail how the jaw behaves and how your teeth should be directed to the new position. After that, it’s time to apply the braces, which may vary according to the needs and taste of each patient. But usually, this sort of treatment is characterized by applying one or two metal bands on the teeth for them to be aligned.

When the braces are placed, the hardest part for the patient starts. Occasionally, with adjustments, there may be some discomfort, and even pain. Consultations at the dentist should be more frequent, and usually held once a month to see if everything for a regular check-up. The length of the treatment may vary an it goes from a few months to quite a few years. But usually patients carry braces at least a year, with a maximum of three.

During that period, patient also has responsibilities. There is special care to take and food to avoid. Chewing gum and other candies are forbidden, as well as soft drinks and foods with high sugar concentrations. Tough food things like popcorn or nuts, can weaken or even break the brackets. Moreover, the patient needs to be extra careful with oral hygiene, because there are more spots where the toothbrush can’t reach. As for sports, when practicing an activity where you may potentially be hit in the face, you should use a special teeth protector so that the gums and lips don’t get hurt by the wires.
